James Surwilo

James “Buzz” Surwilo is an environmental analyst with the Solid Waste Management Program of the Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation.  Buzz’s diverse responsibilities include technical assistance and outreach, policy and planning, and permitting of solid waste facilities.  Buzz is also the Department’s point person on a variety of difficult-to-manage waste types, such as construction and demolition debris, contaminated soils, asbestos, disaster debris, mine tailings and, of course, scrap tires.  Buzz also previously worked several years for the Vermont Agency of Transportation in various capacities, so has a firsthand appreciation of the glacial pace that DOTs embrace innovation.  Buzz is on the Vermont Radiological Sampling Team and is a Vermont Wildland Firefighter.  Buzz has an A.A.S in Forestry and a B.S. in Environmental Science.
